look at me go!!

found on google imagesSo here I am, a newbie to the field of blogdom. I’ve been meaning to get the ball rolling on this for a while now, but I felt the task was daunting. I thought, “who the fuck am I? Nobody would listen to me, anyways.” I guess I’ll start by giving you the backdrop.

I was going to go to school to get a Ph.D. in Pharmacy (crazy, I know). I was hellbent on getting a career that would bring in a decent amount of cash so that I would live comfortably. After a few semesters of floundering my way through college and not really knowing what to do with myself despite my good grades, I started thinking. Then I started talking. I talked with my best friends, my mom, my dad, and my stepmom about what makes me happy. I came to realize that money isn’t really what I’m after. I’m not trying to get all Utilitarian on you when I say that my main goal is happiness. So I eventually reached the conclusion that instead of going to school for Pharmacy, I’d go for a Major in Journalism and a Minor in PR. Writing makes me happy, keeps me sane. Until recently, I was a decent writer. I’ve taken some creative and critical writing classes to hone my skills and have seen a vast improvement. I’m not talking grammar and punctuation, I’ve always been good with that. I’m talking content and structure. I’m talking emotion and making a point that readers feel and understand with their hearts AND their brains. Linking the heart and the brain, believe it or not, can be a feat. I’m here to take on the challenge, not just for me, but for you.

I don’t know what I’m going to talk about. Probably a lot of things. I’m nervous that readers like you won’t come across my page to discover what I have to say. I’m nervous that when you do, you won’t like it, or won’t care. But I’m hoping you do. I’m hoping that in reading what I have to say, you’ll want to start saying things too. I want to give you ammunition for conversation, for thought, for emotion. I want to push us (you and I) outside our comfortable boundaries to open our eyes to what’s out there, scary as it is.

I want to give voice to those of us who can use our brains. I don’t care who you are, or who you think I am as defined by social and cultural boundaries. I don’t care where you come from, where you’re going, what you like and dislike, who your family is, whether or not you have any money, whether or not you’ve got a high school diploma (or lack thereof) or a Ph. D. in I’m Freakin’ Awesome. I don’t care if you’re American or not, I don’t care if you’re right wing or left, I don’t care what you look like. All I care about is that you can turn your brain on. If you’ve got that, you’ve got what I want.

The question is, what do you want?
